AdobeUSA 2009 Workshops

As in past years, there will be a series of hands-on workshops offered in the week leading up to AdobeUSA 2009. The workshops will be organized and conducted by the Adobe Construction Department at Northern New Mexico College. TheĀ  workshops will be held at the same location as the conference itself (NNMC’s El Rito Campus) and will all take place from Monday to Thursday the week before the conference. All workshops depend on sufficient enrollment to take place!

  • ADOB 114 - 101 “Adobe Construction Basics” - CRN: 21952
    Dates: May 11, 2009 - May 14, 20009 (8am to 4pm)

    Instructor:Kirk Higbee

    Description: Learn the basics of adobe construction in a one-week intensive class in El Rito, New Mexico. The class focuses on hands-on learning and will introduce you to such topics as making adobe bricks, mixing mud mortar, adobe brick wall construction, foundations for adobe structures and much much more.

  • ADOB 112 - 101 “Arches Domes and Vaults” - CRN: 21848

    Description: Students learn systems to create wall openings and roofs in adobe structures using masonry materials in situations where wood and steel are not available or not desired. They will discuss and use traditional New Mexican and world-wide techniques.

    Instructor: Eduardo Carvalho

    Description: Eduardo Cavvalho is an architect and rammed earth specialist from Portugal. This class covers the fundamentals of rammed earth construction.

  • ADOB 147 - 104 “Earth in Contemporary Architecture” - CRN: 21858

    Instructor: Eduardo Carvalho

    Description: The course will discuss the use of earth as a structural and conceptual material in contemporary architecture. The use of earth as a building material has been sanctioned by the concern about sustainability. Being a recyclable and low embodied energy building material, earth presents itself, in the scope of sustainable development, as a legitimate alternative to industrial building materials.

NM resident $36.72* per credit
Non-NM resident $86.70* per credit

The CRN is the most important reference to the course when registering so please make sure you make a note of it from above!

As of the fall 2008 semester, NNMC recommends completing the application for admissions and course registration process entirely online! Please visit the NNMC admissions page for more information and to begin the online registration process.
