Plasters, Renderings and How They Work
Patrick Taylor, Cornerstones Community Partnerships
Abstract
Oftentimes when we need to plaster an older structure we find ourselves looking at the most recent plaster coat to guide us in the making of our decisions. In so doing, we may or may not take into consideration how that coat of plaster has affected the structure.
When dealing with historic and prehistoric structures, traditionally you will find one of three plaster scenarios; an earthen type of plaster, a cement plaster, or no plaster at all. As municipalities, organizations, and home owners look to restore, preserve, or conserve their structures they are often confused or indecisive as to what type of plaster, if any, is appropriate. I want to be able to share with you my perspective which will hopefully assist in the making of these important decisions.
Our region is rich in its cultural heritage of which historic buildings play an important role. In addition, this article will deal with the region’s history of earthen plasters along with mud and lime plasters.
